Autumn In The Air NEXT | START OVER | PREVIOUS
This is a Gulf Fritillary butterfly. They are not quite as big as Monarchs, but because they are orange and black, they are often mistaken for Monarchs. The usually come here in large numbers in late summer and early fall, and if you have Lantana in your flower garden, you'll probably have some visits from Gulf Fritillaries. They lay eggs on passionflower vines, especially the ones that grow wild and make fruit you may know as Maypops. The females supposedly lay great numbers of eggs, and the caterpillars are supposed to be easy to rear, but I've had no luck. I've found a few eggs but only two tiny caterpillars, and they both died.
