Brandt Ayers is chairman of Consolidated Publishing Co. Inc. and publisher of The Anniston Star.

Mr. Ayers has been a member and Trustee of numerous organizations devoted to foreign relations, including The Southern Center for International Studies, the Inter-American and International Press Associations, The Century Foundation, the Council on Foreign Relations, and the American Ditchley Foundation. He is a member of the advisory Committee to the Neiman Fellowship program at Harvard, and is the founder of the World Affairs Journalism Fellowship program which provides opportunity for heartland Editors to work and study abroad. Mr. Ayers is listed in Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the World.

Closer to home, Mr. Ayers holds an honorary doctorate from The University of Alabama at Birmingham, is in the University of Alabama's Communications Hall of Fame, and is in the Alabama Academy of Honor. He was a member of the Alabama Citizens for Constitutional Reform, currently serves as co-chairman of the Alabama Research Alliance and was the founding chairman of the Next Start program which is designed to help students in Anniston with educational and scholarship opportunities, tutoring and job shadowing.

What struck me most about the Supreme Court's Second Amendment decision is the irony of a right-wing judge doing what conservatives had always complained about: Making new laws and ignoring the founders' intent. Has Justice Sam Alito abandoned the shibboleth, the philosophical underpinning of the conservative movement — original intent?
