The United Daughters of the Confederacy has five objectives: educational, historical, benevolent, memorial and patriotic. Since April had been designated as Confederate History Month, the education objective was achieved by providing college scholarships and educating fourth-graders with a coloring contest and a small test of 11 questions about the War Between the States. Each participating school had winners with the first-place winner of each school winning a monetary prize and a chance for their paper to be entered into a state coloring contest.
To achieve the education objective, the Major General Patrick R. Cleburne Chapter participated in the coloring contest with Cleburne County Schools and schools in the Oxford area.
Emma Norton of Ranburne Elementary was the overall winner and was presented with an additional monetary prize.
