The federal government will build a new federal courthouse just south of Anniston City Hall, and plans to acquire an entire city block for the project, officials announced today.

In a press release, city officials said the General Services Administration would move forward with plans to acquire property between 10th and 11th Streets and Gurnee and Moore avenues.

“Factors such as the site’s ability to satisfy our project purpose, security, environmental, physical characteristics, traffic and parking all lead to this site as the preferred location, as well as the connectivity to the social cultural need economic base for Anniston,” the press release said.

The GSA had been considering two other sites, including the block just to the north on which City Hall stands, and the former site of Anniston First Baptist Church, farther north at the intersection of 15th Street and Gurnee Avenue.

The release included no details on how the government would acquire the property.
