TODAY IN HISTORY The Star's Bill Edwards takes a look back at this date in history. July 12, 1935, in The Star: A previously announced $1.9 million building and renovation project at Fort McClellan could get under way as soon as October, now that President Roosevelt has signed the papers authorizing the expense. Also this date: Cleve Adams, age 49, died at his home at Blue Mountain following an illness of eight months. Funeral services will be conducted at Bethlehem Church by Rev. T. D. Stovall. Nephews will serve as pallbearers; they are Mallory Fant, Dave and Horace Hughes, and James, Carl and Kenneth Adams. Additionally: Thirty-five guests attended a birthday party held recently for Carl Hathorne, 21. His mother, Mrs. Winnie Hathorne, was assisted at the event by Mrs. N. E. Garrett and Mrs. R. R. Moore, we learn in a column of Golden Springs social news.
July 12, 1985, in The Star: The Bank of Heflin announced yesterday it will merge with Colonial BancGroup Inc., a statewide bank holding company, pending stockholder and regulatory approval. The 80-year-old bank’s name would then become Colonial Bank of Heflin. Also this date: The U.S. Department of the Interior is now reviewing a recommendation made by the Alabama Historical Commission that two of Anniston’s neighborhoods and 28 of its properties be included on the National Register of Historic Places. Tyler Hill and the eastern section of Glenwood Terrace are the neighborhoods.
