People in Calhoun and Cleburne counties may see smoke today and tonight as the U.S. Forest Service plans to burn 432 acres of the Talladega National Forest today three miles northwest of Heflin.

The burn area will be bounded in part by Forest Service roads 500 and 523, according to a release from the Forest Service. Smoke also may be visible on Alabama 9 west of the burn area. The release says drivers on those roads should use caution.

Smoke from the fire is expected to blow northeast. The smoke may near Alabama 9 just north of the intersection with U.S. 78 as temperatures cool tonight, the release says.

The section of the Pinhoti Trail between Forest Service roads 500 and 523 will be closed during the burn.

The burn is part of 32,000 acres the Forest Service plans to burn this year. The fires are set and monitored by Forest Service workers. The burns are intended to remove fuel that could lead to uncontrollable fires if allowed to accumulate. They also help to promote the growth of longleaf pines by burning away competitors.
