April 26, 1935, in The Star“Spring flowers swayed gently in the April breeze over 98 graves of Confederate soldiers in Hillside and Edgemont Cemeteries today, flowers placed there in commemoration of the valiant service rendered in the devastating War Between the States that ended 70 years ago this month. The Anniston chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy placed the flowers on the earthy mounds that mark the final resting place of illustrious heroes.” The front-page article notes that the custom is carried out in Alabama, Georgia, Florida and Mississippi each April 26, which is Confederate Memorial Day. Also this date: In social news from Pleasant Valley, we learn that Clifford Gardner entertained his Sunday School class with an egg hunt at his home this past Sunday morning. Attending were Norman and Leonard Gorey, Edward Gorey, Clayton Johnson, Vernon Boozer, John Williamon and Harold Littlejohn. Additionally: Star staffer M. H. Johnson reviews Taps at Reveille, a new retrospective collection of short stories by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Johnson pronounces it “an interesting little book.”

According to a brief AP wire story, citing the opinion of a University of Iowa language professor, slang words and phrases grown-ups need to know when communicating with today’s teens include “grody,” “grody to the max,” “dweeb,” “zod,” “nuked,” “wasted,” “mondo-choice” and “way sweet.” (The latter two are positive descriptors.)
On this day in ... 1607 English colonists went ashore at present-day Cape Henry, Va., on an expedition to establish the first permanent English settlement in the Western Hemisphere.
