On Feb. 14, some women will be showered with flowers, imported chocolates in frilly heart boxes or special jeweled trinkets, but I will not be among them.

Lest you think I feel sorry for myself, rest assured that I no longer do. While painful at the time, the rare attempts by my significant other to mark this occasion are now laughable.

There was the infamous Bronze Mum Caper, when very late one Valentine’s Day, a floral delivery van pulled up with a giant pot of bronze mums and an accompanying apology explaining that bronze mums were the only blossoms left at such a late hour.

And then there was the card that said, “Happy Valentine’s Day Sis.”

I know Significant Other is not alone in his indifference to this occasion. The American Greeting Card Association reports that women purchase 85 percent of the 2.6 billion valentine cards sold.

This statistic alone should be a wake-up call for guys.

Though this is not an advice column to the valentine challenged, consider this a friendly reminder that the day should be acknowledged in some way.

One good way is with a gift of special wine. Consider one of these locally available wines appropriate for the occasion.

Salvatore Principe Prosecco $11.75 at Tyson Art and Frame in Golden Springs. The newest edition in the Principe line. A delicious white sparkling wine from Italy with a heart label. What could be more romantic?

The label is the creation of renowned artist Salvatore Principe, who grew up in New York City and whose first works were sculptures made from street refuse. He peddled his art on the street until his work caught the eye of famed department store Bergdorf Goodman. He was given a three-week show in Bergdorf’s windows, which led to shows at Saks Fifth Avenue and Tiffany’s.

Principe’s original works now garner mega bucks, especially his heart paintings. Reproductions of his hearts adorn the labels of his namesake wines. These wines are available throughout the year, but are especially suited for gifting on Valentine’s Day. Salvatore Principe 2007 Artist Collection Cabernet. In the $11 range at both Tyson Art and Frame and at the Wine Cellar on Quintard Avenue. Another heart-adorned wine whose fruit is sourced from the Mendoza region of Argentina. Pleasant, easy drinking cabernet. Good with chocolate.

Tyson Art and Frame and The Wine Cellar stock an array of Principe’s wines in all varietals, all in the $11 price range.

Bitch Bubbly. $10.75 at Tyson Art and Frame. If you are on less than good terms with your significant other (or your significant other is a good sport), buy a bottle of Bitch. Pretty pink sparkling wine from Australia with lots of Jolly Rancher fruit flavors. Sealed with a soda pop cap and adorned with a pink label surrounded by hearts. Bitch also comes in a non-sparkling version in a concentrated 2008 red Grenache, also $10.75 at Tyson’s. Add one of Tyson’s bottle valentine charms for extra pizzazz.

Roederer Estate Anderson Valley Brut Rose. $29.99 at the Wine Cellar. Beautiful sparkling California pink wine made by the French Champagne house of Roederer. From a blend of predominately pinot noir and chardonnay, this is a smooth, fruity off dry wine that looks lovely in champagne flutes.

Dom Pérignon Vintage 2000 Champagne. $143 at Tyson Art and Frame. When only the best will do, purchase this bottle along with two champagne flutes decorated with hearts ($35).
