When the local Marine Corps League was being formed last year, a reporter from The Star asked Calhoun County Commissioner Eli Henderson what would be accomplished by forming a league in Calhoun County.

Eli's reply was that he again wanted to see a Veterans Day parade in our county and a Toys for Tots program for Christmas. We recently had the best Veterans Day parade in years, and the Toys for Tots program is in full swing.

Eli has done more for veterans in our county than anyone I know. To me, the most important thing he did was when he built the parks at Coldwater Creek and Wellborn, he did not forget the veterans. At Coldwater Creek Park, the names of John W. Hudgens, Earol A. Hughes, William D. Sapp, Howard R. Thomas Jr., Willard F. Young and Donald E. Barnett, who lost their lives in Vietnam, are chiseled in stone.

Underneath Old Glory at the Wellborn Park, which I helped build, are the names of Allan Ray Chaffin, for whom the new Marine Corps League is named, along with Paul V. Goodwin, Charles D. Pope and James David Craft, my sister's son and my nephew, who are all Vietnam veterans.

Eli, thanks for not forgetting our veterans.
