The Associated Press says one team is No. 1. The computer disagrees. College football fans smack their hands to their foreheads and say, Not again.

The first Bowl Championship Series (BCS) rankings arrived Sunday. The BCS uses a combination of polls and computer models to rank the best teams for an eventual national championship game.

Despite reaching the top of the AP poll for the first time this season Sunday, the University of Alabama found itself behind top-ranked Florida in the BCS standings.

The BCS method for deciding a national champion has been in place since 1998. It's never been without controversy or folly.

The BCS' most impressive conceit is believing a computer can decide the best teams in a game that is otherwise played on a field of turf.

For a more accurate ranking, the NCAA would have to employ a playoff system for college football, just as it does with every other intercollegiate sport it governs.
