A crash resulting from the chase killed Harold Henry Davis, 46. James Dyrke Johnson, 39, of Anniston, was driving the vehicle, said Anniston police Sgt. Allen George.
A police officer stopped Johnson in a 2000 Chevy pickup truck around 12:45 a.m. because it had no license plate. The vehicle smelled of alcohol, police said.
When asked for identification, Johnson drove away. The officer pursued the truck to Noah Medders Parkway and then onto East Glade Road, according to police reports.
Johnson lost control of the truck near the 300 block of East Glade Road, where he struck several trees. Davis was killed on impact in the wreck, George said.
Johnson was still being held in the Anniston City Jail Monday morning, but will be moved to the county jail later in the day, a jail employee said. His bond is set at $500,000.
The Anniston Police Department’s accident investigation unit is still examining the details of the incident, George said.
