The Houston Texans need a quarterback, as they are likely to release Matt Shaub soon.

If the Texans want, they can get a replacement in this year’s NFL draft in April. After all, they have the No. 1 pick.

Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel is available for the draft, and the team will get plenty of pressure to pick the home-state Heisman winner.

But should the Texans give in to what the fans want? Is Manziel truly a good NFL quarterback, or was he simply a decent athlete playing in a great offensive system with a great offensive line and some top-notch receivers?

I’m certainly not one to say whether Houston should take Manziel with the No. 1 pick or, say, South Carolina defensive end Jadaveon Clowney, who looks like he’ll be an exceptional pass rusher in the NFL.

But if I were the Texans, I’d examine this: The Texans went 12-4 in 2012 and ranked second in the AFC with a plus-12 turnover ratio. When they fell to

2-14 this past season, they were minus-20 in turnover ratio, which was the worst among the 32 NFL teams.

Which player will impact that statistic the most ― Manziel, Clowney or someone else? Whoever is the answer to that should be the top pick in the draft.
