AUBURN -- The Jacksonville State softball team split its two games in the Auburn Wilson/DeMarini Classic Friday, routing Mississippi Valley 13-1 and losing to Auburn 6-4 in nine innings.

Sara Borders went 4-for-7 in the two games, extending her hitting streak to nine games. The Alexandria native had a double and single in the win and two homers against Auburn.

Her second homer, with two outs in the seventh, sent the Auburn game into extra innings before the Tigers won it in the ninth on a grounder by Morgan Estell.

Border has 10 multi-hit games this season and leads the Gamecocks (10-4) with a .532 average and 16 RBIs.

JSU went into the seventh against Auburn trailing 5-2. Ella Denes’ two-out double kept the Gamecocks alive, and she scored on an infield throwing error, which brought Borders to the plate for the tying homer.

Neither team could move its runner in the eighth, and JSU left its runner stranded in the ninth. In the bottom of the inning, Emily Carosene bunted Tiffany Howard to third, and Howard scored on Estell’s grounder.

The Gamecocks opened an 8-0 lead on Mississippi Valley after two innings. Amanda Maldonado hit a three-run homer in the second inning, her second three-run blast in as many games after hitting only one homer last season.
