SPRING GARDEN — Most coaches cringe at the thought of having to beat the same opponent a third time in the area tournament. Spring Garden’s girls faced an even bigger challenge in the Class 1A, Area 10 tournament Saturday. Already 4-0 against Cedar Bluff on the season, the Panthers added a fifth win over the Tigers with a 47-25 victory.

Spring Garden (24-4) limited Cedar Bluff to two points in the second quarter and three in the third and led 39-13 after three quarters. Panthers’ coach Ricky Austin credited really good team defense from his team’s point zone with limiting Cedar Bluff’s shots.

“Our full court zone press was really effective, too,” Austin said.

Much of Spring Garden’s offense came from post players Tykeah Rogers and Haley Motes. Rogers finished with 14 points and Motes scored 12 points. Kati McGinnis led Cedar Bluff with 11 points, six in the first quarter.

Spring Garden hosts Jefferson Christian Thursday in sub-regional play.

Class 2A, Area 10

Woodland 86, Ranburne 42:
At Woodland, the Bobcats scored 20 points in the first three minutes of the game and led 58-21 at halftime. Leah Strain paced the attack with 20 points. Shanna Strain netted 19 points. Jaide Walker scored 14 points and Adre Bowen had 12 points. In all, 10 players scored as Woodland improved to 29-1.

Hali Wilson’s 13 points were best for Ranburne (17-9). Indiana Morgan scored 10 points for the Bulldogs.

Woodland and Ranburne won’t know their respective sub-region opponents until Monday night when Lanett and LaFayette meet at Lanett to decide the Area 9 winner.

Class 1A, Area 12

Ragland 62, Faith Christian 34:
At Ragland, Faith Christian led 25-24 at halftime but Ragland crashed the boards hard in the second half and used its depth to eventually wear down the Lions. Madison Stephens scored 14 points and recorded seven assists for Faith. Madelyn Adams and Jasmyne Groce each netted 10 points for the Lions. Groce had nine rebounds and Adams grabbed eight boards.

For the Purple Devils, Kailey Echols tallied 25 points and Belle McKinney had 12 points.

Faith Christian (11-13) travels to Skyline Thursday in sub-region action. Ragland hosts Woodville.
