In The Star

Feb. 10, 1939, in The Star: What might well have been the last meeting of the Anniston City Council, at least in the view of those attending (given the drive in Montgomery to change city government to the commission form), was held in a brief fashion last night. Four minor items of business were on the agenda. Also this date: It was an unseasonably warm day yesterday in Anniston, with a daytime high of 85 and an overnight low of 73. Temperature is expected to drop sharply tonight, however. Additionally: Pope Pius XI died this morning around dawn at the Vatican. For the time being he is lying in state at the Sistine Chapel.

Feb. 10, 1989, in The Star: Though saved last night by the Anniston Planning Commission, the historic Butler house at 11th Street and Fairmont Avenue still faces an uncertain future. The Planning Commission members voted 8-1 to reject a rezoning request that would have led to the destruction of the 102-year-old house and the construction of a $1.8 million high-rise apartment building in its place. Lowndes Butler of Anniston, whose mother, Addie, was the last descendant to live in the house, said he wishes the Calhoun County Historical Society luck in its effort to find a buyer. Also this date: In an apparent violation of state law, Oxford Mayor Leon Smith used city postage and other municipal resources to mail campaign literature for congressional candidate Donald Holmes. Smith said he inserted Holmes brochures inside letters sent to 742 senior citizens by the Oxford Parks and Recreation Department. Postage for the letters, which used parks and recreation department stationery, was paid at a bulk rate by the town. “I'm the one who authorized it,” Smith said. “I didn't ask nobody about it. What difference does it make?” Smith said Holmes, a Democratic candidate for the vacant 3rd District congressional seat, did not know about the mailing. Holmes has an office at Oxford City Hall and his wife, Brenda, is Oxford City Clerk, but the mayor said she did not help mail the letters. Smith said he did not see any harm including the political brochure. “If (the brochure) hadn't been in there, the postage would have been the same,” Smith said. “If I owe the postage, I'll be glad to pay it.”
