In September 1941, my parents enrolled me in the first grade at Sweet Water High School, where I graduated in 1953. Although I now reside in an assisted-living home in Clarksville, Tenn., my heart is still in Alabama, where I defend the public schools from being plucked by the Harpies of the Legislature and others who would destroy public schools.

In this election year (I still vote by my right of domicile in Enterprise), we must marshal the forces of education to vote against the politicians who would crucify public education upon a cross of political ambition. We must fight our foes in the Legislature, we must fight them in the courthouses, we must fight them in the press, we must fight them in the ballot boxes, we must fight them everywhere.

With thanks for imagery inspired by Oliver Wendell Holmes, William Jennings Bryan and Sir Winston Churchill, I now conclude. Thank you for your help.
