On Tuesday, the members of the Jacksonville Board of Education unanimously voted to move Kitty Stone Elementary School away from the city center to the outskirts of town. I am very disappointed and disheartened by their decision.

Leaving the school in the city center near local businesses, restaurants, churches and the library would be safer for the students and much more beneficial for a strong, vibrant community. One of the arguments for moving the school is that the students need a modern school for the 21st century. Why not refurbish the current school and make it modern? Why not build a new school at the current site?

In the discussion of what to do with the current Kitty Stone property, one proposal is to use the site for a future middle school. While I hope this will be a valid proposal, I can’t help but be skeptical. The Jacksonville board members have had their votes, and I will have my vote when elections roll around. I’ll be using my vote to oppose all of the current BOE members based on their shortsighted decision to relocate Kitty Stone Elementary School.
