Speak Out: Don’t make an unwise move

I was profoundly dismayed to hear that plans are already in the works — and money has already been borrowed — in order to move Kitty Stone Elementary School to the edge of town. Why hasn’t there been more coverage of this in the local newspapers? This move sounds really unwise.

My son will be attending Kitty Stone for another two years. The pods are outdated, granted, but would it not be better to remodel or rebuild part of the school on the current site? When I drop off my son at Kitty Stone, I feel that he is quite safe there, next door to the Methodist church and so close to the center of town. The thought of driving him out to Wal-Mart’s backyard is appalling.

If I have to do that, I can assure you that I won’t feel inspired to run any errands on the Jacksonville square. I won’t be picking up gifts or household supplies at Crow Drug, I won’t be having breakfast at Java Jolt or supper at Roma’s, and I will probably change banks as well, because if I have to drive practically to Weaver to take my son to school, I’ll be saving gasoline and time by doing all my errands out there. And I won’t be the only one.

This is all very saddening, though, because it means that the family businesses on the square are going to suffer, and I’m going to miss them. Who made this decision, anyway? How many Jacksonville residents really want to go millions of dollars into debt because of this move?
