The latest data from the Pew Research Center show that Americans hold strong views -- positively and negatively -- about many countries. The results of the Pew polling aren't that surprising.

In other words, Americans who were polled have favorable opinions about U.S. allies such as Canada and Great Britain and hold less-than-favorable opinions about other nations, such as Russia and many of those in the Middle East.

Politics plays a role, Pew says: "More Republicans than Democrats have a favorable impression of Israel (74 percent of Republicans vs. 55 percent of Democrats). Tea Party Republicans have especially positive views of Israel: 86 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents who agree with the Tea Party view Israel favorably, compared with 68 percent of Republicans and GOP leaners who do not agree with the Tea Party."
