Good for him.
But if you’re the Crimson Tide fan who wears a shirt that says, “My favorite team is Alabama and my second-favorite team is whoever is playing Auburn," don’t feel bad. You’re not AJ, and you’re not supposed to be.
If you want to cheer for Florida State to whip Auburn, that’s fine. And if you’re an Auburn fan who hopes Oklahoma miraculously can figure out how to beat a halfway decent team in a bowl game, by all means pull for the Sooners.
Nothing wrong with that.
Alabama and Auburn are rivals. This is the way it’s supposed to be.
Do you think Yankees fans cheered for the Red Sox in the World Series this past fall? Fugetaboutit. Do you think North Carolina smiles when Duke cuts down the nets? The Bears and Packers aren’t cheering for each other, and neither are the Ravens and Steelers. And nobody in the NFL wants the Cowboys to win.
Alabama and Auburn is greater than all of those rivalries. Alabama vs. Auburn (or Auburn vs. Alabama) is the second greatest rivalry in existence, trailing only Good vs. Evil.
So Roll ’Noles or War Sooners or whatever. Have a blast. And don’t feel guilty for once for not being politically correct.
