Dec. 16, 1938, in The Star: The local high school basketball season tips off tonight when the Oxford Yellowjackets and the team from White Plains engage at Fulton Hall in Oxford starting about 7:45 p.m. Sam Snow, a senior, is captain of this year’s team and playing the position of center will be Douglas Kirby. White Plains started its season early and has already scored two victories against tough teams, so it’s thought Oxford could be the underdog tonight.
Dec. 16, 1988, in The Star: The Anniston City Board of Education gave the go-ahead last night for the next steps in the Cobb Elementary School project, which includes formally asking the Anniston City Council for the $2.5 million needed to build the school. Cobb architect Julian Jenkins said bids for the project should be opened Jan. 31. His timetable calls for a March 1 groundbreaking, with the project completed and ready for occupancy by the summer of 1990. The school will initially be built to house 600 students, and will be easily expanded to house up to 1,000 students, he said. In other action, the school board also authorized Anniston High School to change from a six-period to a seven-period instructional day for next year to allow students to take more electives.
