It was my wife asking did we have the radio on, which we did not since we were busy getting the shipment in before opening at noon.
She said the president had been shot while visiting Dallas. Turning on the radio, we soon learned that the president had died from the shooting. Shortly after opening, one could tell that the environment of entering customers was one of joy, in that of the first few customers entering, a then-segregated store, with a loud vocal sounds, “give me a fifth, glad the (expletive)-lover is dead, got to celebrate.” This was, for a good while, the attitude of many of the regular customers.
Some gloom was expressed much later in the day when there were black customers in the store.
There have been events since, but only a few with such a lasting effect. One trusts that this never happens again.
