Calhoun County Sheriff deputies say a man arrested on stalking charges Friday followed and harassed his wife as she tried to file a protection order against him.

According to Sheriff Larry Amerson, the 38-year-old victim has filed several reports against her husband, Rex Jay Gardner, 40, of Anniston, for domestic violence and harassment.

The victim told deputies that Gardner had sent her harassing text and phone messages in September, and that she went to the Calhoun County Courthouse on Nov. 4 to file a the order against him.

According to Amerson, when the victim left the courthouse, she noticed Gardner’s car parked outside. As she drove down Noble Street, Gardner followed her, the sheriff said, and the victim later told police that Gardner yelled at her and tried to get her to pull over.

Amerson said the victim obtained an arrest warrant for Gardner on Nov. 7, and he was arrested on the 100 block of National Drive, where he works, on Nov. 8.

Gardner was released on a $15,000 bond Friday, with conditions that he wear a monitoring device and have no contact with the victim, police reports said.

He is scheduled to appear in court Dec. 12.
