A Calhoun County grand jury recently indicted a man and woman on capital murder charges in the September stabbing death of an 89-year-old Wellborn woman, according to court records released today.

Anniston residents Walter Craig Pinkston, 32, and Monica Marie Shively, 30, were in the Calhoun County Jail today. Each is charged with committing capital murder during the commission of a robbery and capital murder during the commission of a burglary.

Warrants for their arrest allege the two stabbed Alma Fleming while trying to steal money from her.

Calhoun County Coroner Pat Brown said an autopsy revealed that Fleming was stabbed multiple times in the chest.

Brown said Fleming likely died the night of the incident, Sept. 9. Her body, however, was not found until two days later, when her son and daughter-in-law came to plan the victim’s 90th birthday.

Fleming’s son, Wayne Fleming, told The Star after the incident that he believes the suspects approached his mother and offered to do chores around her house for money. Wayne Fleming said his mother likely agreed simply to help the two.

Pinkston and Shively both were denied bond by Circuit Judge Debra Jones in September.

Shively’s arraignment will be Friday at 11:30 a.m., when she will plead not guilty, according to her appointed defense attorney, George Allen Meighen.

No defense attorney had been assigned to Pinkston as of this evening, according to court records.

Meighen told The Star by phone today that even though Shively and Pinkston are in a common-law marriage, he is not representing Pinkston and he does not know when he will be arraigned will be.

Calhoun County District Attorney Brian McVeigh said by phone today that all he can legally say about the case is that it will be placed on an active court docket.
