Two items perfectly illustrate how far off the deep end of the political spectrum some Americans have fallen.

The first comes from the Guardian, which asked questions of the two candidates in the Republican runoff to fill the unexpired term of Jo Bonner in the 1st congressional district of Alabama. Bradley Byrne is what we'd call the establishment candidate while Dean Young is running with support from the Tea Party.

The Guardian asked each candidate a series of questions. Young's answer to the final one is telling:

Where was Barack Obama born?

Byrne: He was born in Hawaii and he has produced a birth certificate.

Young: That is what we call the $64,000 question! I have no idea! [When pushed for an answer:] Kenya.

Sort of sums it up neatly, doesn't it?

Meanwhile in Texas, there's a wild rumor the United-damn-Nations will soon take over the Alamo, which in Alabama would be akin to the U.N. setting up camp at Bryant-Denny in order to play soccer matches there. Nonetheless, the matter has been taken so seriously in the Lone Star State that Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson felt the need to correct the record:

Some folks might think that getting on this list means the UN has some sort of influence at the Alamo. Those folks must not be from around here.

Sheesh.
