Federal authorities today offered a $3,000 reward to anyone with information about a burglary at Oxford Lumber Ace Hardware in which 18 handguns were stolen.

The owner of the store, at the intersection of U.S. 78 and Barry Street, had a federal firearms license, and the 18 guns were all available for purchase, according to Oxford police Lt. L.G. Owens

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is offering the reward.

Owens said that on Wednesday evening around 10:30 p.m., the store alarm was activated by the suspect, who gained access to the building through a rear door. The alarm company called police, but the burglar escaped with the guns, Owens said. There also was some damage to the building, Owens said.

Owens said he did not know how many suspects were involved. Citing the ongoing investigation, the lieutenant would not say how the suspects managed to open the rear door of the building.

Police ask anyone with information to call the Oxford Police Department anonymous tip-line at (256) 835-6122.
