There's much going on in the world today -- particularly in Washington, where most of our focus is -- but I urge you to take a few minutes and indulge in the latest long-form project by the New York Times, "The Russia Left Behind."

It's on the part of Russia (not Moscow and St. Petersburg, for instance) that Westerners don't normally see, the small, poverty-stricken towns that dot thousands of locations on the Russian map.

One of the project's best parts is the interactive map that's on the left. As you read about the author's journey, the map follows along so you get a sense geographically of where you are.
