Ranburne completes its first round of action against its area opponents when the Bulldogs host Horseshoe Bend for a best-of-5 match today. Coach Kayla Shelton’s team defeated the Generals last year and she worried Wednesday about her players being overconfident entering the Horseshoe Bend match.

“It’s going to be hard to keep their heads out of the clouds but maybe we can stay down were we need to be and be focused for them,” Shelton said.

The Bulldogs improved to 2-0 in area action Monday at Wedwoee with a 3-0 sweep of Randolph County.

Ranburne won 25-16, 25-12, 25-18. Shelton said her players were often able to score four to six times on serve and that good serving and good defense keyed the win.

The Bulldogs continued to play well Tuesday at home as they swept a tri-match against Faith Christian and Piedmont.

Ranburne opened against Piedmont and won 25-21, 25-19. Indiana Morgan and Riley Peterson each had six kills. Erica Taylor added three kills and Morgan Foster had two kills. Setter Lacey Hiett finished with eight assists. Morgan aided the attack with four service aces. Taylor and Brittany Langley each had two aces.

Montana Mattox led the defense with eight digs. Peterson had five digs, Taylor three and Hiett two. Peterson had four blocks, Morgan three and Taylor one. Against Faith, Ranburne won 27-25, 18-25, 15-12.

The kills were distributed pretty evenly between Langley, Mattox, Morgan and Peterson. Mattox had four aces in the first set alone.

“We had better offensive coverage on our hitters (Tuesday) night,” Shelton said. “We did that a little bit better. We’re still not doing as well as I’d like to on defense. We’ve still got to work on that. Our serving, we’re still doing pretty well. That’s one thing that’s helped a good bit.”

At the Woodland round-robin tournament Saturday, Ranburne will open at 9 a.m. against Clay Central. Matches with Beulah and Lanett will follow at 10 and 11. The tournament ends with a 1 p.m. meeting against Woodland.

Ranburne’s first three matches will be played in Woodland’s old gym. The Woodland match will be in the new gym.
