Anniston Mayor Vaughn Stewart this afternoon was recovering from an appendectomy performed at Regional Medical Center.

The mayor experienced abdominal pain Friday and Saturday and went to the hospital as a precaution, said the mayor’s son, Vaughn Stewart III. Doctors at the hospital were able to remove the mayor's appendix today before it ruptured, the younger Stewart said.

“He caught it pretty early on,” Stewart III said.

Stewart III shared the following statement from his father this afternoon:

“The competent professionals at RMC successfully removed my appendix Sunday morning. I appreciate all those who have kept me in their thoughts and prayers and hope to be released from the hospital tomorrow. I am anxious to get back to work revitalizing Anniston.”

Stewart III said his father’s condition is improving and added that he has been walking, talking and laughing since his surgery.
