Anniston police Capt. Allen George said the suspect told the woman he had experienced a car accident while he was driving under the influence. The suspect said if the grandmother wired $2,800 to him in Ecuador that he wouldn’t be charged with the crime, George said.
Shortly after the woman wired the money, George said, she called her grandson, who said he wasn’t in an accident and hadn’t asked her for money. George was uncertain if the woman’s grandson lived in Ecuador.
George said the incident would be difficult to investigate because the money was sent outside the United States and police had no suspects.
A suspect, if found, could be charged with first-degree theft, a felony.
