Today marks the 50th anniversary of former Gov. George Wallace's infamous schoolhouse-door stand at the University of Alabama, where there are all sorts of events planned. Perhaps the most amazing tidbits you'll hear on this occasion will be from Wallace's daughter, Peggy Wallace Kennedy.

In a lengthy interview with the Associated Press, Kennedy -- the wife of former Alabama Supreme Court justice Mark Kennedy -- said she and her father never discussed the incident, and that's why she remains unsure about her father's true motives that day. She also is sure that her father was sincere when he reached out to black Alabamians after he was shot during his presidential campaign.

Kennedy was 13 when her father stood in the door to Foster Auditorium and gave this speech. "At that time I just didn't understand why he would just stand and not let two African-Americans enter a university," she said.
