The end of an Anniston landmark will help give a fresh start to a local nonprofit that is a daily destination for more than 100 hungry people.

As Wells Fargo employees prepare for their 40-year-old building at 10th Street and Quintard Avenue to be torn down in the coming weeks, they helped local charities help themselves to the building’s furniture.

Roland Brown, president of the Anniston Soup Bowl, worked alongside volunteers to empty the sixth-floor kitchen and dining area for use in the Soup Bowl’s new building, which will open at 15th Street and Circle Drive later this year.

“These tables and chairs will replace the menagerie, the mismatch we’ve got in the building now,” he said. “All the tables will match, all the chairs will match, to let our clients know we do care about them.”

The Soup Bowl offers hot lunches five days a week to those in need. The organization serves about 140 to 160 people per day, with a high of 217, Brown said.

Brown and his crew stacked up dining furniture and other supplies — about 160 chairs and 10 tables — in front of the building to cart them to the old First Baptist Church where they will be stored until the Soup Bowl opens up its new facility.

Drew Holderbein, Wells Fargo district manager, said the bank has donated furniture and equipment to several local organizations, including the Anniston Fire Department, Boys and Girls Club, Anniston Museum of Natural History, YMCA, Interfaith Ministries, Salvation Army and Habitat for Humanity.

“We’ve been trying to give away as much as we can because there are charities out there who can use it,” he said. “So rather than just set it into storage for who knows when … we wanted to salvage as much as we can.”
