Anniston police on Tuesday arrested a 50-year-old man on a felony domestic violence charge.

Anniston police Sgt. Chris Sparks said Phillip Alan Lloyd is charged with strangling his girlfriend, a 46-year-old Georgia woman, during an altercation on April 21 at his home on the 100 block of Holli Lane.

Sparks said the incident initially appeared to be a misdemeanor. However, after further investigation by police and prosecutors, the Calhoun County District Attorney’s Office on May 1 elected to issue a warrant for Lloyd’s arrest on charges of felony domestic violence, Sparks said.

According to the sergeant, the victim had scrapes and bruising around her neck.

Sparks said the delay between the incident and the issuance of the warrant happened because the victim had returned to Georgia and had to drive back to meet with investigators.

Sparks said officers arrested Lloyd at his home on Holli Lane.
