A woman told police Thursday she paid a man $9,000 to remodel her home last month and hasn’t heard from him since.

Anniston police Capt. Allen George said the 60-year-old woman’s home was damaged in a fire on March 16. The home is located on the 1100 block of Sydney Street, according to a police report. The report states the victim paid $9,000 to the remodeler on April 8.

George said the woman has been unable to get in touch with the man since the payment was made. The captain was uncertain whether the man was a licensed contractor.

Police were still investigating the incident today, George said.

A suspect could face first-degree theft charges, a felony, according to the report.
