Hughes honored

On March 29, the Cleburne Chapter of United Daughters of the Confederacy presented a World War II Cross of Military Service to Mr. Chester M. Hughes of Heflin. The bestowal ceremony was conducted by the Chapter Recorder of Military Service Jo Howard and Chapter President Lynda Lowery. Mr. Hughes served aboard the USS Manning, US Navy, during World War II. His great grandfather George W. Hughes served in Co. K 40th Regiment, Georgia Infantry during the War Between the States. The event was held at the Hughes home in Heflin with Mrs. Sybil Harlan Hughes, daughters Brenda Hughes Freeman and Nina Hughes Pike, plus other relatives present.

On March 8-10, two members of the Cleburne UDC Chapter were in Richmond, Virginia, to participate at the UDC General Spring Board meeting. Chapter President Lynda Lowery and Chapter Vice President Pat Killian participated in the meeting and luncheon held at the UDC national headquarters in Richmond. Lynda Lowery was introduced as 2012-2014 Historical Articles Editor of the UDC Magazine. Pat Killian is a member of the UDC Membership Development Committee.

Ten women from the Cleburne UDC Chapter attended the Letitia Ross UDC District meeting on March 16. The event was held at the Saugahatchee Country Club in Opelika. Attendees are Frances Surrett, Lynda Lowery, Carolyn Skinner, Emmie O’Haver, Ann Vaillancourt, Wilma Gosdin, Pat Harrington, Martha Wilkinson, Jo Howard and Pat Killian.
