Alyse, daughter of Jeff and Jennifer Rader, is seven years old and has a rare disease called Porphyria. It causes her body to produce an enzyme that attacks her red blood cells and results in swelling, severe pain, organ damage, and nausea. She also suffers muscle weakness, palpitations, confusion, and seizures.
Saturday’s program, Awaken for Alyse, featured The Cochran Family from Dallas, Ga., The Swannee River Trio from Atlanta, and Everburning from Centre. Each of the performing groups agreed to donate all proceeds of the event to the Rader family. The event raised a little over $1,700.
Alyse experienced a bad week and was unable to attend the fund raiser sponsored by Awaken Ministry of Glencoe. Her parents, Jeff and Jennifer, and younger brother were able to attend.
“We want everyone to know how much we appreciate the support we have received,” said Jennifer.
According to the family’s Facebook page, Saturday night after the benefit Alyse suffered another rough night that included a bad seizure.
Those attending the event were offered an opportunity to help with the family’s financial needs by purchasing hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, drinks, and baked goods.
Items available at the silent auction were spread across several tables and attendees had the chance to bid for items such as autographed and framed photos of Brody Croyle and Marcel Darius, gardening supplies, and health and beauty services. A vacation package for two nights and three days in a penthouse suite in Orange Beach and two paintings were also included in the auction.
Not to be left out completely, Alyse made and supplied items for the fundraiser. The little girl has an avid interest in crafting and made sun catchers out of beads that were also available for sale. “She’s had so much fun with them, she didn’t want to stop,” said her mother.
Dara Ivey Cole, who founded Awaken Ministry with her husband John, said that the crowd was off a bit due to the weather. However, before the concert began they had raised almost $1,000 in materials for the auction and donated food for the concessions from 84 individuals and businesses.
The ministry, which began in January, plans to hold a monthly concert to reach out to the youth. “We felt that God wanted to use us to awaken this younger generation. A whole generation is being lost. Satan’s stealing them from the church,” explained Dara.
“They need our prayers and support,” she added.
Amanda Bangs who is also part of the Awaken Ministry worked with Dara to put the event together. Jennifer said, “Amanda is amazing. She has really lifted our family up in prayer.”
Jeff, Alyse’s father, added with a smile, “Even though she is an Auburn fan.”
