Two Anniston residents were charged Wednesday with stealing a table from a store in Oxford.

Martha Stebbins, 32, and Gerald Lewallen, 42, were charged with third-degree theft of property, a misdemeanor, according to Oxford police Lt. L.G. Owens.

Owens wrote in a press release that Lewallen parked a black Ford Explorer in front of the Dollar General on U.S. 78 Wednesday between 10:25 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. and Stebbins allegedly tried to put an outdoor table that was on display into the back of the car.

“She could not get it to fit, so she opened the passenger door and placed the table in the back seat,” Owens said in the account.

Stebbins got back in the car and Lewallen, the driver, began to leave the parking lot, Owens wrote.

According to Owens, a store manager yelled at the suspects to stop, but they drove away.

Oxford police were called and patrol officers stopped Stebbins and Lewallen at U.S. 78 East and Meadowbrook Lane, the release said. The table was recovered and both suspects were charged, according to Owens. The stolen table’s value was listed as $10.

Stebbins and Lewallen were each released on $1,000 bonds from the Oxford City Jail Wednesday, Owens said. The two are expected to appear in court on May 7.
