We hear again and again that more money is needed to run our state government while reliable sources estimate that as much as one-half billion dollars travels across our state line every year for the purchase of lottery tickets. Those purchases help other state governments and, therefore, residents of other states.

To simplify, Alabama money supports other states, not Alabama. It is interesting that the state of Pennsylvania has had a lottery since 1971 that has earmarked 100 percent of the net profit from the lottery for senior services including property tax relief, rent rebates, free and reduced-fare transit, low-cost prescription drug programs, long-term living services and 52 area agencies on aging, including full- and part-time senior centers across Pennsylvania. That must provide a lot of relief to Pennsylvania’s general fund budget.

I commend Pennsylvania for successfully “thinking outside the box.”
