If you’re a member of the Visual Arts Society of Jacksonville State University, you know how important the organization is to JSU’s art department and its students. If you’ve not been a member, this is the year to join!

VAS President David Cummings says that in the last 20 years, the society has grown to more than 200 members and raised more than $100,000 for scholarships for JSU art students. The role of the VAS is currently expanding to meet the department’s increasing needs in the face of decreased state support for JSU.

Monies from VAS efforts go to the Art Students Scholarship Fund, the Art Achievement Fund, the Graduate Fellowship Fund and the Art Foundation. JSU’s new graduate degree program has increased the need for both scholarship funding and funding for equipment upgrades. The art department is growing each year, and even though JSU has more art majors than ever, the amount of funding from the state is shrinking. It takes effort and creativity to make up the shortfall.

This year, the art faculty is helping give VAS members special reasons to participate. Last November, Doug Clark had a fall foliage photography workshop, and this spring and summer, there will be other learning events (bookmaking with Karen Hendricks and Mary Anne Sampson, family portrait photo workshop with David Cummings, shadowbox building with Bryce Lafferty, drawing with Allison McElroy) to enjoy.

The VAS Members Show, slated for this summer at the Hammond Hall Gallery, will be a fun way to share and see works created by VAS members. It’s free for members to participate, and it’s quite a kick to see art that you created in a gallery setting. Some members have already started creating their work. Join VAS now to get in on the action!

Happening sooner (as in Friday from 6-9 p.m.) is the VAS Souper Supper and Annual Membership Meeting at the Berman Museum. This fun event is included in the cost of your annual membership and will feature an assortment of yummy soups and cornbreads and plenty of chances to win one of the fabulous themed baskets donated by VAS board members, sponsors and JSU faculty. Raffle tickets for the baskets will be available for purchase at the event, so be sure to bring some cash!

If you’d like to attend the Souper Supper, your reservation must be in by Tuesday. Call Jane Greene at 256-782-5626 to reserve your seats.

Would you like to join other VAS members as they expand their creativity? You can find out more about VAS events online at their new blog: www.vasjsu.wordpress.com or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/groups/VASJSU. Your individual membership is only $25 a year or $40 for your family. Students are just $10.

The annual membership meeting and VAS workshops are for members only and by reservation only, so join today!
