With 6-foot-1 junior Timothy Hawkins listed as the tallest starter, Weaver's boys struggled to rebound in a 72-65 defeat to Holly Pond in the Class 3A regional semifinals. The Broncos outrebounded Weaver 46-17.
Even so, Weaver (22-10) managed to tie Holly Pond 17-17 after one quarter, 31-31 after two, 43-43 after three and 60-60 at the end of regulation.
"We're a small team," Weaver coach Daryl Hamby said. "It showed today. We got outrebounded by 29, and that was the difference today.
Weaver had its chances, including at the end of the fourth quarter. The Bearcats held the ball for the final 1 minute, 50 seconds of regulation, but an off-balance 3-pointer as the clock ran out failed to go in the basket.
Chris English paced Weaver with 27 points, a team-high four rebounds and seven steals. Mike Stephens added 13 points, and Paul Hubbard scored 10.
For Holly Pond (24-5), which will play either Ashville or Pisgah in Saturday's finals at 2:15 p.m., Austin Smith had 20 points and 16 rebounds, while Colby Adams scored 17 points.
"We knew we had a height advantage at several positions," Holly Pond coach Mitch Morris said. "We didn't always utilize it, but we did enough."
