Jackie Sigafuss, 29, from Alexandria was hit by a 1999 Isuzu at 1:30 p.m., Alabama State Troopers said. Troopers reported the man driving the car, Carl Vest, of Gadsden was not injured in the accident.
Sigafuss was in the surgical intensive care unit at UAB Hospital as of Thursday morning, a UAB phone operator said.
Lt. Jon Garlick, with the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, said Sigafuss was walking alongside the road near Supreme Beverage in Alexandria when he was struck. The Sheriff’s Office responded to the accident and coordinated with local emergency medical service crews, Garlick said.
Garlick said Wednesday afternoon that he believes the incident will be considered an accident because Wednesday’s severe weather significantly reduced visibility on area roadways.
A spokesman for the Alabama State Troopers said Thursday morning that the agency is still investigating the incident.
