The Calhoun County Spelling Bee is now set for 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 6. at Anniston Middle School.
Anniston City Schools Superintendent Joan Frazier on Tuesday decided to postpone the bee, as forecasters predicted storms.
The event had been set to begin Wednesday at about the same time the National Weather Service announced a storm capable of producing a tornado was churning in the air near the middle school. That same storm later spawned a deadly tornado in Adairsville, Ga., according to the National Weather Service.
“I’m really glad I did it now,” Frazier said late Wednesday morning. “I know it’s a human call and you want to make the best call that’s in the best interest of all the students.”
Frazier made the decision around noon Tuesday. Organizers said they were able to reach all participants in time and none of them came to the middle school for the bee.
Students from public and private schools across Calhoun County attend the competition each year. Frazier said as the leader of the system hosting the event, she felt responsible for the safety of the students who would have been en route as the weather approached.
