Re “Red states can survive” (Speak Out, Dec. 3):

This letter was good for a laugh. One sentence is especially hilarious: “Where would those who receive welfare checks in the blue states get their money from, then” (if the red states secede)?

Are there any states in the United States, red or blue, that are more of a welfare state than Alabama, since we get more than $1.60 from the federal government for each dollar we send in?

How many of the blue states would like to get Fort Rucker, Maxwell Air Force Base, the Marshall Space Flight Center and other federal installations? We could go on and list all the other federal programs that benefit Alabama so we don’t have to pay reasonable property taxes.

How about Alabama’s share of the $16 trillion national debt? Do you think that would be wiped out when big-spending members of Congress from the Alabama delegation incurred a lot of it in buying votes?

I think the reaction from many of the blue states to the threat of Alabama’s secession threat is, “Promises, promises, all we get is promises.”
