An official at UAB Hospital in Birmingham said Kyle McCartney, the school principal, was in the intensive care unit there this morning, but did not provide information on his condition.
Springville police Chief Bill Lyle said McCartney was traveling south on U.S. 11 in a Toyota Camry with his daughter when a northbound Ford Ranger collided with McCartney’s vehicle at around 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Officers are investigating the accident, Lyle said.
Both McCartney and the driver of the other vehicle were airlifted to UAB Hospital, Lyle said, and McCartney’s daughter was airlifted to Children’s Hospital. The identity of the other driver was not immediately available
Lyle said he believed McCartney’s daughter’s injuries to be much less severe. Attempts Friday to learn her age and condition and the condition of the other driver were unsuccessful.
Roy Bennett, student services coordinator for Oxford schools, said the school system is receiving reports on McCartney’s condition.
“We appreciate everyone keeping Mr. McCartney and his family in their thoughts and prayers,” Bennett said.
McCartney’s accident is the second involving an Oxford Middle staff member this year. Science teacher Charles Miller was treated at UAB after a motorcycle accident in July. After the accident, McCartney set up a video room at the school so that students could make a get-well video for their teacher.
