An 18-year-old woman was wounded in a Thanksgiving Day shooting in Saks, Anniston police said.

Police responded to a report of a shooting at a house in the 900 block of West 51st Street in Saks around 3:45 p.m. Thursday, Anniston Police Sgt. Chris Sparks said.

Sparks said the woman, who had been shot in the hip area, was taken to Regional Medical Center, then airlifted to a hospital in Birmingham for further treatment.

“We’re not certain exactly what happened,” Sparks said of the cause of the injury. He said the shooting may have been accidental, but that police are not entirely certain of that.

Sparks said police believe the woman was shot with a pistol. Asked whether police now had the pistol in their possession, he said only that “evidence was collected.”

The shooting occurred inside a residence, and other people were in the residence with the victim at the time of the shooting, Sparks said.

“The case is still under investigation,” he said.
