HOBSON CITY — Hobson City’s new town council members are ready to improve their home and they want their fellow residents to help.

Hobson City’s mayor and governing body were sworn into office during a special ceremony Monday evening, after which they asked the more than 60 residents in attendance to help improve the town. Along with Mayor Alberta McCrory, four of the five new council members had served the last four years: Susie Jones, O’Mildred Ball, Deneva Barnes and Frederick Striplin. Joe Cunningham is the new face on the council.

Jones thanked everyone in attendance for their support during the election, but added that more of their assistance was needed if the town was to move forward.

“I urge you all to come to council meetings,” Jones said.

Barnes also requested help from residents.

“Please come to council meetings and submit your thoughts,” Barnes said. “Help us make this city greater than it was in the past.”

Striplin reiterated what his fellow council members said, adding that he and the council will do whatever possible to create a police department for the town. The creation of a police department to improve town safety was a main topic during the election.

“We heard you and we’re going to do all we can to make that happen,” Striplin said.

McCrory, who received a standing ovation after taking an oath for her second term in office, said improving the town will take the entire community and not just one council.

“We have to work together,” McCrory said.
