About 100 people packed the City Hall council meeting chambers to witness Mayor Leon Smith and the new council take their oaths of office.
For Smith, it was the eighth time he had placed his hand on a Bible to swear an oath as mayor. Smith was first elected in 1984.
“I’m honored to have that,” Smith said to the audience about his years in office. “It is because of you who live here.”
Returning council members sworn in Monday were Steve Waits, Phil Gardner and Chris Spurlin. Charlotte Hubbard and Mike Henderson were the new council members to take the oath. Hubbard, who was also celebrating her 60th birthday Monday, elected to take her oath separately from her fellow council members.
“I’m the only person who has never been a council member before and I just wanted to make that commitment to myself and the citizens,” Hubbard said.
Henderson had previously served on the council but lost a re-election bid in 2008.
“I’m very humbled by getting to serve on this council again and look forward to a productive four years,” Henderson said.
