If you want to cast your vote on Nov. 6 but aren’t registered, you only have a short time left to do so.

The voter registration deadline is today at 4:30 p.m.

Residents who are already registered but who are voting absentee have a little bit more time than that to fill out their forms; the cut-off to request absentee voter applications is in a week, on Nov. 1.

J.J. Taylor, a member of the Calhoun County Board of Registrars, said the number of people registered to vote in this year’s presidential election is on pace with those registered four years ago, during the 2008 race.

As of Thursday afternoon, 69,512 people were registered to cast ballots in Calhoun County. Just more than 5,900 residents had registered between January of this year and Thursday at noon.

“We’ve had so many people in here,” Taylor said from the Board of Registrars’ office.

This week, in the days leading up to the registration deadline, between 200 and 300 people have registered each day, he said.

But over at the Calhoun County Courthouse, the number of absentee voters has lagged this year compared to the some 3,000 applicants who cast ballots as absentees during the last presidential election, Circuit Clerk Ted Hooks said.

So far, only 939 Calhoun County residents have requested absentee voter forms, Hooks said. The majority of those have been elderly people.

“The older people are more diligent about voting,” Hooks said. “They’ll come in with their walkers and their canes.”

People who will be out of town on Election Day can come to the fifth floor of the courthouse to cast their absentee ballots, the circuit clerk said. Or they can mail in their forms, as long as they do so before the Nov. 1 cut-off.

Those who have yet to register must do so in person today at the Board of Registrars’ office in the Ken Joiner Calhoun County Administration Building or by mail, as long as it is postmarked by today.

Mail-in registration forms are available for download from the state website

The Board of Registrars’ office will be open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
