A 16-year-old boy has been flown to a Birmingham hospital after his vehicle was struck by an 18-wheeler on Alabama 9 this afternoon.

The accident happened at about 2:45 p.m., just after classes ended for the day at White Plains High School, where the boy is a student, according to Stan A. Cook of the White Plains Volunteer Fire Department.

The boy’s GMC sport-utility vehicle was pulling onto Alabama 9 from White Plains Road and was struck by the 18-wheeler, which was heading north on the highway, Cook said.

A helicopter took the boy to Children’s Hospital in Birmingham at about 3:16 p.m., Cook said. The boy’s injuries included a head contusion and a concussion, he said.
