Calhoun County Circuit Judge Debra Jones sentenced Angela Powell, 42, to 20 years in prison for shooting Steve Ray Morris, 35, in the stomach on Dec. 31 in 2009. Powell’s trial had been scheduled to begin on Oct. 15.
Calhoun County Assistant District Attorney Sheila Field said Powell shot Morris after the couple argued about money in their home on Charlie Penny Road near Pleasant Valley. Field said Morris hit Powell during the argument and said he was leaving her. Powell then shot an unarmed Morris with a pistol, Field said.
Powell reported the shooting to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office and responding deputies arrested her at the home after she told officers she shot Morris.
Attempts Friday afternoon to reach Powell’s attorney, Kimberly Davis, were unsuccessful.
Powell faces a probation hearing in Judge Jones’ courtroom in January, Field said.
